Facebook Timeline: Tell your life story with a new kind of profile
If you have a Facebook account you may noticed that you have the option to “upgrade” your Facebook account to the new Facebook Timeline. A lot of you may have upgraded already, like it or not, Facebook is migrating all of its users to the new Timeline Layout, however, there is no set date as to when this becomes compulsory.
What is Facebook Timeline I hear you ask? Timeline is a section of a Facebook user’s account that replaces the Profile and Wall pages, and merges them together. It shows the story of your life, as you choose to tell it or as Facebook has recorded it, in a visual, scrolling, reverse-chronologically ordered timeline. It’s a cross between visual blog and online scrapbook
The Timeline notice should be direct on your profile page labelled Introducing Timeline page, where you can learn more about Timeline, as well as how to use its new features.
You get seven days to fiddle with your Timeline before it automatically goes public to your friends. If you want them to see it earlier, then you can choose the option to publish it now.
To help guide you through it, here’s a few things you need to know about Timeline and some tips to make the best of it;
Cover– The cover is the big picture on top of your Timeline. It is one single picture that people see each time they visit your profile. So make sure to find yourself a good one that sums up your life. It may be tricky to find an image of yours, or one you’ve been tagged in that fits the shape. But you can adjust the picture to fit the space.
Activity log– If you are a Facebook user then this should bring back some great, and maybe some embarrassing memories. Everything you’ve ever done, posted, tagged, been tagged in, is available and showing since you joined the site. Scroll through and there’s bound to be a few hidden gems you’d forgotten about.
Timeline– There is an actual timeline showing the years you’ve been a member of Facebook and any years for events you’ve already inputted such as school or college days. One click on a year gives you direct access to all that you uploaded or were involved with during those 12 months.
Life events– The choice of life events to add is huge. Everything from failed relationships, illnesses, holidays and even your first kiss if you can remember back that far. And if there really is something missing, you can add it via ‘other’. Now whether you want to tag the person the first kiss was with is another thing all together. And whether they want you to, or can even recall it, is a whole different can of worms.
In addition to the layout itself, Timeline is accompanied by 80 new apps that users are able to add to their profiles. Categories of apps include music, news, travel, and food, among others. According to Facebook, these new apps will enable users to better share with their friends the activities that they enjoy.
Don’t forget to add Storm as your friend and leave us feedback and thoughts on the Timeline or anything else!!
